Dramatic Outdoor Low Key Portrait Lighting Tutorial

Dramatic Outdoor Low Key Portraits

Its time for a Lighting Tutorial!

In many cases you want to have that polished studio look with your portraits but when you are outdoors or you don’t have the gear what can you do?

By controlling your ambient light as well as adding your own artificial light via the Canon 600EX-RT Speed light inside of a basic lighting modifier, in this case the Fstoppers Flash Disc, I am able to have a studio quality low key shot with only a simple and small amount of gear.

The camera settings for this shot were:

  • Shutter:     1/1250 sec
  • Aperture:  f/2.8
  • ISO:  160
  • White Balance: Auto
  • Focal Length: 100mm
  • Flash Mode:  ETTL
  • Flash Exposure Comp: 0
  • Metering Mode:  Evaluative
  • Exposure Compensation:  -4 2/3

The Gear Used for this shot were:

I did a similar write up on doing a solid black background using the Profoto B1 lights which I rented from Lens Pro To Go,  you can view that post HERE.
